Cylindrical grinding machines are used for grinding the punches and other round components in the die. Boring machines, on the other hand, are used to enlarge and refine existing holes to achieve the required size and geometric accuracy. In progressive stamping dies, the holes for the punches and die inserts need to be bored to very tight tolerances to ensure proper fit and alignment.

Measuring Tools

Accurate measurement is a crucial aspect of die – making. Without precise measurement, it is impossible to ensure that the progressive stamping dies meet the required specifications. There are several types of measuring tools that we use in our workshop.

Calipers are one of the most commonly used measuring tools. They can measure the external and internal dimensions of the die components with high accuracy. Micrometers are even more precise, capable of measuring dimensions to within a few micrometers. We use micrometers to measure the thickness of the die inserts, the diameter of the punches, and other critical dimensions.

Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are high – precision measuring devices that use a probe to touch the surface of the workpiece and measure its coordinates in three – dimensional space. CMMs are used to verify the overall shape and dimensions of the progressive stamping dies, ensuring that they conform to the design specifications. They are especially useful for measuring complex geometries and for detecting any deviations from the nominal dimensions.

Die Polishing Tools

Polishing is the final step in die – making, which is essential for achieving a smooth surface finish on the die cavities and punches. A smooth surface finish reduces friction during the stamping process, preventing the stamped parts from sticking to the die and improving the overall quality of the parts.

We use a variety of die – polishing tools, including abrasive stones, polishing compounds, and buffing wheels. Abrasive stones come in different grit sizes, which can be used for rough and fine polishing. Polishing compounds are applied to the surface of the die and then rubbed with a polishing cloth or a buffing wheel to achieve a mirror – like finish.
